What is a meristematic tissue and what are its charachteristics?

The term Meristem was suggested by 'Nageli'. Meristematic tissue helps in the formation of new cells hence it is also called formative cells. It is capable of divisions and production of new cells.They have large nucleus  They have less number of vacuoles. Cells tightly packed without inter cellular space. They are usually seen at the growing regions. Cell walls are thin. Cells are small and identical. They are usually isodiametric. The plastids are in proplastid state
